Felipe Esparza @ Variety Playhouse, March 31

(Atlanta) Felipe Esparza is a comedian and actor, best known for his raw, real-life comedy that audiences everywhere can relate to. Recognized for his wild hair and his often-imitated phrase, “what’s up, fool?”, people are surprised to find out that Felipe is also the same person referred to and imitated in infamous stories by fellow comedian, Gabriel Iglesias. Felipe won NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2010, and soon after, starred in and produced his first 1 hour Showtime special, and is now touring comedy clubs and theaters across the world and working on a new 1 hour special. He also launched a popular new podcast April 1, 2014, entitled, “What’s Up Fool?”, on the All Things Comedy podcast network. In addition to winning the top prize on Last Comic Standing, Felipe has appeared on numerous television shows, including “The Eric Andre Show”, “Arsenio Hall”, “The Tonight Show”, “Lopez Tonight”, TruTV’s “World’s Dumbest”, Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and “Russell Simmons Presents Stand-Up at the El Rey”, “Comics Unleashed”, Showtime’s “Comics Without Borders”, BET’s “Comic View”, and Galavisión’s “Que Locos” (where he had more appearances than any other comedian). In 2009, he appeared in his first two feature-length films, “The Deported”, with Nick Turturro, Talia Shire, and Paul Rodriguez and “I’m Not Like That No More”, a film based on his stand-up comedy where he stars as Paul Rodriguez’ son. In 2012, Felipe starred in and produced his first one-hour special, “They’re Not Gonna Laugh at You” for Showtime, which is now available on DVD and streaming on Netflix.

divine felines

Divine Felines @ Michael C. Carlos Museum, Feb. 10 – Nov. 11

(Atlanta) From domesticated pets to mythic symbols of divinities, felines played an important role in ancient Egypt for thousands of years. The Carlos Museum will present Divine Felines: Cats of Ancient Egypt, an exhibition featuring cats and lions (and even dogs and jackals) in ancient Egyptian mythology, kingship, and everyday life. Drawn from collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Carlos Museum, the exhibition will be on display for nine months and showcase more than 90 objects exploring wild and domestic cats and dogs, feline and canine deities, animal burial practices, and luxury items decorated with feline and canine features.

Divine Felines examines the duality of feline nature with objects such as the large limestone sculpture of a recumbent lion (305–30 BC), a diminutive bronze sphinx of King Sheshenq (945–718 BC), a cast-bronze figurine of a cat nursing four kittens (664–30 BC), and cat-shaped wooden coffins for cat mummies (664–332 BC). Also included are images of feline deities, amulets, and luxury items decorated with feline features, and a small section of the exhibition looks at the role of dogs and jackals in ancient Egypt.

Jurassic Park In Concert @ Atlanta Symphony Hall, January 20 & 21

(Atlanta) One of the most thrilling science fiction adventures ever made, and featuring one of John Williams’ most iconic and beloved musical scores, Jurassic Park transformed the movie-going experience for an entire generation and became the highest-grossing film of all time in 1993, winning three Academy Awards®. Masterfully directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the best-selling novel by Michael Crichton, Jurassic Park transports us to a secluded island where scientists have succeeded in reviving the age of dinosaurs in a brand new, immersive theme park, the likes of which has never been seen before.

Renowned paleontologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) are part of an exclusive group invited to the island for a sneak preview of the park’s wonders. When things go terribly wrong, they must fight for their lives against unimaginable dangers in a desperate attempt to escape from a world gone mad…a world in which dinosaurs once again rule the earth.

Now audiences can experience this ground-breaking film as never before: projected in HD with a full symphony orchestra performing Williams’ magnificent score live to picture. Welcome…to Jurassic Park!
